Dear Residents,
I am happy to inform you that, at the Annual General Meeting in May, I was elected to serve as Chairman for the forthcoming year.
We have a new District Councillor, Edward Pope, our previous Councillor, Ken Vincent retiring from Office at the recent elections.
During the summer several events proved very popular – the Village Fair, the new Open Gardens event, Best Kept Gardens Competition and, of course, the Best Kept Village in which we won and became Champion of Champions. The War Memorial was also judged the best kept in Lancashire. Trophies will be received later this month and Newburgh will be a major feature in the November edition of Lancashire Life.
The Parish was honoured to receive sponsorship from our twin town, Newburgh, Indiana, for a delegate to be sent to the 50th Anniversary celebration of the Sister City organisation held in Washington DC with a stop over in Newburgh to witness and participate in the re-location of their Town Hall and Offices.
Residents will be very sorry to hear from Alan Hill that he expects to be leaving the Post Office soon. On behalf of residents, the Council would like to thank Alan; he has been a great asset to the village, providing a service second to none, with an ever-cheerful spirit. We shall all miss you!
At the same time, we are delighted to hear that Irene will be keeping the business going and trust we can all help her to make it a success.
We also welcome Ellie Furzeman as the new landlady of the Red Lion. She takes over the hotel together with her husband Matt and daughter Molly and some of Ellie’s plans are featured later in this Newsletter.
It is pleasing to welcome Rev. David Towler back into circulation after his recent health problems.

A month has gone by since I started at Newburgh School and I don’t think time has ever gone so fast in my life. I have been made extremely welcome here by children, staff and parents. I liken school to a huge machine with many different working parts which all drive hard together to push forward. School is really coming alive as new displays are put in place and children embark on new topics for the new school year.
I do realise that not everyone in the village has children at the school but I believe that a school is the very heart of the community, the future. If anyone within the village would like to become more involved in the life of the school, in any small way, please pop in to see me.
Christmas Charity.
For several years some residents have responded to the Operation Christmas Child Appeal to fill a shoe box with Christmas gifts for children in the developing world.
This year more donors from the village would be welcomed. Leaflets are available in Newburgh Tea Room giving details of age groups and advice on contents of the boxes.
Photography Competition.
Following the success of this year’s “Sunsets” photography competition at Newburgh Fair, we’re announcing the subjects for 2007 now so you can get off to an early start. They are: -
“Reflections” and “Theme in Red”.
Remember, you can see this year’s winners on the Newburgh website. Go to Picture Gallery and click on Newburgh Art.

Post Office.
Alan Hill writes: “After over 4½ happy years here, this is to advise with much sadness, that I expect to be leaving the Post Office soon. I have made many friends here and hope still to see you in the future, as I shall not be moving far. I thank you very much for your support over the years and hope you continue to support Irene as she will be staying on to run the business. Thanks, Alan.”
The Red Lion.
Ellie Furzeman has taken over as landlady. Originally from Yorkshire, she previously ran O’Neill’s pub in Soho.
She plans to keep the pub as a family-orientated business and already has ideas for new events. On the first Sunday of every month there will be live, traditional music with customers also invited to try their hand at some gentle entertaining. On Saturdays and Sundays, brunch will be served from 10am – a chance for Mums to have a lie-in and Dads to bring the children for a treat.
There will be a children’s Halloween party on 31st October from 4.30pm to 7pm. This is for 4-11 year olds with party games and food laid on plus a goody bag for every child. Cost is £5 per child and bookings are now being taken.
Watch out for future plans.
Pumpkin Bonanza.
The good weather this summer has led to an excellent pumpkin crop at the Strawberry Farm. Pumpkins are now available in the shop for Halloween or you can pick your own in the field.
Newburgh Website.
There have been more than 2900 visitors to our website since June.
Most popular pages are the “At a glance” section, the picture gallery, pages on clubs and societies, annual events and the Parish Council. The site is being accessed by visitors across the world with “hits” from the U.S.A., Europe, Russia, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa.
The next step is to produce a village events calendar including regular meetings of clubs and societies, the School year, Church Festivals and sporting events. If you have ideas for this or for any other website content, please email Chris Moore via the website (click Contact us) or ring on 01257 – 463471.
Sharon Elizabeth.
Sharon Elizabeth’s hairdressing salon will now be open on Mondays from 10am to 2pm. It will continue to be open as usual from 9am to 5pm Tuesdays to Saturdays.
Newburgh Gardens Open Day.
We enjoyed a most successful Open Day, thanks to those garden owners who joined in and residents who visited these beautiful gardens. Between us we raised an impressive £1001, which will go towards the development of community amenities for young people.
At the last Parish Council Meeting, a decision was made to again hold this event in 2007 on a date to be decided. We need to present some new gardens to visit and if you are interested in participation please contact Maureen Turner 462970.
Best Kept Garden Competition.
Congratulations to the winners of our 2006 Competition: -
Kermode Cup – Mr & Mrs Clayton.
Cartmel Shield – Mr & Mrs Catterall.
Red Lion Cup – Mr & Mrs Owen.
There were also 24 Commended and 10 Highly Commended Certificates awarded by our independent judges. Thanks to Mrs Skinner, Warbreck Nursery and the Red Lion Hotel for generously giving gift vouchers for the winners.
The full results can be seen in the Village Notice board.
Best Kept Village Competition.
Thanks again to everyone who helped to keep the village clean and tidy, all of which contributed to our becoming Champion of Champions.
