NEWBURGH NEWS        September 2009.

Dear Resident,

Autumn is already under way with the nights drawing in and a nip in the air. Despite the poor summer, I hope you’ve all enjoyed the recent spell of sunshine.

Happily, the bad weather did nothing to daunt the village’s many keen gardeners! The Open Gardens event took place in July and was again a great success. Thanks to Maureen for all her efforts in organising this. Judging for the Best Kept Gardens is now complete and we will hold our usual presentation in October.

The sun managed to shine on Newburgh Fair, which seems to go from strength to strength. It was a brilliant day and saw greater numbers attending than ever before. I’m sure you will join me in sending huge thanks to the dedicated group who make it happen.

The celebrations on the day of the Fair included the opening of the new Play Area – the culmination of a long and complicated process. I’d like to pay tribute to Chris who led the project, for his patience and tenacity in seeing it through. The finished product is a superb addition to our community.

Kind regards,

Jacky Citarella,

Chair, Newburgh Parish Council.

These are held in School at 7.30pm. Future dates are 28th October,         25th November and 9th December.

Celebration of Local Living.

This initiative held on 21st May was extremely successful with over ninety people attending. We are now in the process of producing a local food directory. Thanks to all who attended and contributed to this popular event.

Calor Village of the Year.

The cheques and certificates were presented on 13th August with Crooke Village, near Shevington being the winner of this Competition. It was pleasing for Newburgh to be awarded third place and receive a Certificate and a cheque for £100 that will be a valuable contribution to the new Play Area fund.

Our submission reflected the many activities undertaken by village organisations.

Volunteer Wanted.

Our long serving Neighbourhood Watch Co-ordinator has decided to stand down and we are now seeking someone in the village who will act as the replacement.

Lancashire Constabulary plan to re-launch the Scheme in October, it is, therefore opportune for someone new to get involved. If you are interested and would like to know more, please contact the Clerk

The new Play Area is a great success with many children using the facility since it opened in June. The Play Area was short listed for the Best Practice Environmental Awards made by Lancashire Environmental Fund (the major funder of the Play Area). We did not win but it is pleasing to reach the short list.

The Play Area is operated by the Parish Council and supervised by a Management Committee. If you have any questions or comments, please advise Brian Howard, Clerk of the Council.

Newburgh Cricket Club –

“Clubmark” award.

Your local cricket club is delighted to report that it has recently achieved Cricket’s Quality “Clubmark” status award. This prestigious accreditation is only awarded by the Cricket Authorities to clubs, which comply with strict quality guidelines – Ground Facilities, Coaching & Child Welfare.

Newburgh is only the 4th team amongst members of the first division of the Southport League to achieve this accolade. Although the 2009 season has now come to an end, ambitious plans are in hand for the close season to further develop the quality of facilities and coaching, aided by a grant from Awards for All funding. This is designed to develop and encourage players for our three senior sides and three junior teams. New recruits are most welcome.
