NEWBURGH NEWS. November 2006.
Dear Residents,
This being the last issue of the year, it is right that we should look at what we have achieved.
We had an excellent Fair Day, a very successful Open Gardens event and a superb Best Gardens Competition, the Presentation Evening would be hard to surpass. Our Vicar, David Towler is well on the road to recovery from illness, we welcome the new Headteacher, Janice Reynolds and the new licensee at the Red Lion, Ellie Furzeman.
Newburgh has been honoured as the Winner of the Best Kept Village in Lancashire, Champions Class and the War Memorial was awarded the Best Kept in Lancashire Trophy.
Your Parish Council and the Clerk, Brian Howard, have each achieved Quality Status and your Council was re-elected unopposed, which leaves me to suspect we must be doing something right.
As part of the Parish Plan, the Village Green has been refurbished and other objectives in the Plan are being progressed satisfactorily.
In conclusion, I thank residents for their involvement and support during the past year and hope for the same in 2007. I wish you all the very best for Christmas and the New Year.
Reg Porter, Chairman.

New Play Area.
The proposal for a new play area in Back Lane, originally devised as part of the Parish Plan, has now reached design stage. The proposed site is between the Vicarage and Newburgh School. The designs will be available for residents to view from 4.30pm to 6.30pm at Newburgh School on Wednesday, 6th December 2006. The next stages include seeking planning permission, raising funds and getting a lease with Diocesan authorities.
Thanks to the generosity of the Fair Committee, Hare Nurseries, Sports Club and Open Gardens Day, there is already a fund of £5000 towards the total cost.

Operation Christmas Child.
A big thank you to everyone who donated Christmas boxes for sending to disadvantaged children around the world. With the enthusiastic support of Newburgh school children and with lots of publicity through the tea room, the village contributed a grand total of 87 boxes (57 of them through the School). The boxes are now in Liverpool being prepared for dispatch
Last year, the Liverpool operation handled around 50,000 boxes.
Newburgh website.
Our website is undergoing its first update since the launch last summer. Pages are being checked to make sure contact names and telephone numbers are accurate – if we have missed any, click the Contact us link and send an e-mail. Meantime, the number of visitors has now topped 4000, with more hits every day. Please remember, the site is a useful source of information on public services, Local Government, Police, transport and medical services.
Information about the Parish Council is available and the site is a good advertisement for the attractions of the village.
The next step is to introduce a What’s On section with details of village events through the year – Church, School, Red Lion, Clubs, Parish Council, Newburgh Fair etc. Look out for it in late December.
Newburgh School PTA.
The School is collecting old mobile phones in any condition. Send them into school or there is a box in the Post Office. The PTA is trying to raise funds to buy new PE equipment
Vandalism.
It has come to our notice that during the winter and spring half-term holidays, certain young people have deliberately smashed the glass in a greenhouse at the rear of a garage on Tabbys Nook. If caught, this could be a criminal offence. It has also been noticed that unknown people take pleasure in overturning the salt/ grit container at the junction of Course Lane and Smithy Brow. Let us know if you have any information.
