NEWBURGH NEWS
March 2010.
Dear Resident,
As I write this, I am glad to report that the first signs of spring are with us. The winter we’ve just come through must have been the worst one for many years. One of the few highlights of the period was the way our community pulled together and helped each other out.
As a final part of last year’s food project, we are re-visiting all those featured in the Guide, to show them the result and collect any feedback about whether they have benefited from the exercise.
Up-coming dates for your diaries include the Civic Service and the Annual Parish Meeting. The former is on 18th April 2010 starting at 10.30am and will be followed by refreshments in the School. The latter event will be held in the School on 28th April 2010 starting at 7pm when the Council’s Annual Report will be presented. You are all very welcome to come to both events.
Finally, we are once again going through the process of applying for Quality Council status, which we first achieved in 2006. The criteria have been made more stringent and covers more areas of operation but we are optimistic of success.
Best wishes for a pleasant, warm spring and summer.
Kind regards,
Jacky Citarella,
Chair,
Newburgh Parish Council.

Time to start thinking about the Fair – It’s only 3 months away! The theme is Pantomime and the Charities this year are Queen’s Court Hospice at Southport and Twinkle House in Skelmersdale.
Get some dates in your diaries now.
Wednesday, 9th June “Elvis Returns” run by Douglas Valley Lions.
Thursday, “Ladies Night with Steve Charles”.
Friday, “Newburgh’s Got Talent”.
Saturday, 12th June, the Fair itself followed by a Cinderella ball.
Talent Night is ticket only this year so make sure you book early when the time comes. The Ball is very popular too – tickets must be paid for when you book.
More advertising for the Programme is always welcome – if you know of a Company or anyone who wants space, we would love to hear from you.
We are pleased that we have more people than ever on the Committee this year and we are looking forward to a memorable Fair.

Newburgh Fair Craft Show.
You might like to start thinking about entries to this popular section of the Fair. In keeping with the theme of pantomime, we will be including “Create a home for a fairy tale character”, “decorate a slipper for Cinderella” or make a glove puppet.
In the photography section, we are asking for “Castle or Cottage” and for those of you spotted with your cameras in January, we want to see your snow scenes.
Whatever your interest, please participate as it makes such a colourful and interesting display on the day – and who knows? – you might just win a Certificate.
Watch out for the full Craft Show schedules after Easter.
Tree Warden.
If you have an interest in trees, why not consider becoming a Tree Warden? Our current Warden, Colin Dixon, has indicated that he would like to retire within the next two years but he would be willing to train anyone.

A warm welcome to all who would like to join us at our Services, also those new to the village or visiting us.
There are a great bunch of children and young folk who come to our young peoples’ groups. They meet most Sundays at the 10.30am Service, then go down to the School for their own sessions. J.A.M. (Jesus and Me) and Pathfinders cater for tots to teens. The Mothers’ Union meet on the 2nd Wednesday of the month at 2.30pm in Church, they have various speakers, a cuppa and a chat.
Look out for details of special Services over the Easter period.
Red Apple Nursery.
The Nursery site was bought just over twelve months ago and is very much a work in progress. We now have new poly tunnels and recovered
a propagation house, which are heated using state of the art alternative energy. To enable the local community to view our work, we will be open to the public between 10am & 4pm Good Friday to Easter Monday inclusive. So come along, share in our success and learn more about our work.
Newburgh School News.
It seems hard to believe that we are in the final term of this academic year
It has flown by so quickly.
Our thematic approach to learning has been a tremendous success with the “Animal Kingdom” focus for the spring term producing some super models, masks and fantastic pieces of writing.
We have reached the half way mark in our quest for ICT accreditation and have been awarded a certificate to mark this point. This and some of the many other achievements & awards are now displayed in the front entrance hall of School.
Nursery continues to go from strength to strength with a nearly full complement for next September and only a few spaces left. So if you have a pre-school age child, please put their name on the waiting list as soon as possible.
One of the other real successes of the last year has been the parent and toddler group. This is a group of parents who meet on a Tuesday morning in the Victorian Classroom for a chat and a coffee. It is very informal, they organise themselves, we just provide the room but it has grown into a thriving group who all seem to really enjoy the couple of hours they spend together on Tuesday morning 9.15am to 11am.
God Bless.
