NEWBURGH NEWS.             February 2007

Dear Residents,

This being the first issue of the News for the year, the Parish Council wishes you a somewhat delayed “Happy and Prosperous New Year”.

The final event on the Council activity calendar in 2006 was Carols on The Green, which was again successful. We express our thanks to Ellie at the Red Lion for her kind hospitality.

Our new Christmas tree lights were on display with some residents commenting about the lack of colour. However, selection was made in open Council and residents input regarding this should have been made then.

For your diaries, the Council Civic Service will be on Sunday, 13th May and the Annual Parish Meeting will be held on 23rd May. Other Council sponsored activities are Open Gardens on Sunday, 8th July, Best Kept Gardens will be judged as usual and yes, we will probably compete in the Best Kept Village Competition again this year.

Included with this Newsletter is a “Special” regarding actions you could take about the Round O Quarry road and traffic conditions.

Please retain the “Special” for your contact details.

Reg Porter,

Chairman.

Parish Council Meetings.

Residents are most welcome to attend our Meetings, which are held in the School at 7.30pm. Please note dates: 28th March, 25th April and the 23rd May. Minutes can be inspected at the Post Office or on our website.

Parish Precept 2007/08.

Following public consultation on pedestrian safety issues held prior to our 6th December 2006 Parish Council Meeting, it was resolved to precept for the purchase of a Speed Indicator Device (SPID) for the sole use of Newburgh.

The £2700 “one off purchase cost” is therefore, included in the £9741 precept for 2007/08. Whilst this works out at a precept increase of 48% for this year only, without this purchase the increase would have been 6.8%.

Open Gardens Event, 8th July 2007

Last year this event proved very popular and we anticipate it will be equally successful in 2007. A number of gardeners have already expressed a wish to open their gardens but all other offers will be most welcome.

Contact Maureen Turner to register your interest: 01257 462970.

Leeds – Liverpool Canal.

You may have heard that British Waterways will receive less funding this year to maintain their canal network. The Parish Council has expressed concern over the possible adverse effect of this and if residents detect any problems caused by reduced maintenance, please contact the Clerk with details.

The What’s On section has been added (www.newburghlancs.co.uk), listing the main events and diary dates for Newburgh throughout 2007.

As well as providing a ready reference for residents, the section is a good way of publicising activities for the many people accessing the site from outside the village. Newburgh School.

The time has flown since I started here at Newburgh School but I feel we have achieved a great deal in that time. We have changed the organisation of the school day and introduced “Brain Gym” in order for the children to gain maximum benefit from a broad and balanced curriculum. A focussed parent’s forum has been introduced, which gives parents an opportunity to learn more about what is going on in school and to ask questions.

Beginning on February 26th, we are having a PSHE&C (personal, social and health education and citizenship) week, when the children will be taking part in a host of activities ranging from Boxercise and Pilates to Circus skills!

The PTFA have been very active and held events to provide much needed funds for school, new members are always welcome. They purchased new PE equipment for the hall and the children are really enjoying using it. There are lots of plans for the future and I will make sure you are kept informed. God Bless.
