NEWBURGH NEWS. March 2009.
Dear Resident,
This foreword is very different from the one I had planned (please see “Celebration of Local Living”) below,
This is because I wanted to say something about the Strawberry Field’s site. Last Saturday, at very short notice, a firm of planning consultants came to seek the views of residents about two issues.
Firstly, they wanted suggestions for alternative uses of the farm shop building and secondly, to test opinion about the possibility of building a small quantity of affordable housing units on the site.
If you were not able to attend and would like to express an opinion, you can e-mail or phone the Parish Clerk, details at the end of the Newsletter.
We will communicate the results of the consultation and take appropriate action in the event of a more concrete proposal being brought forward.
Kind regards,
Jacky Citarella,
Chair, Newburgh Parish Council.
Celebration of Local Living.
Early notice of a Parish Council event
On 21st May 2009 we are holding a celebration of local living at our Annual Parish Meeting.
The idea for the event came from the campaign last year to save our Post Office when it was very obvious how much we value local services and amenities. The evening will include presentations and displays from local food producers as well as input from some of the local school children and the launch of a local food directory.
Refreshments will be provided.
I hope that you will be able to come along on 21st May and share, what we hope will be, an entertaining and informative evening.
Please put the date in your diary and watch this space for further news.
Red Apple Community Trust Ltd.
Red Apple, which is a local charity, has recently purchased Hare Nursery Cobbs Brow Lane. We hope to use the Nursery in the style of a care farm and offer opportunities for people recovering from health issues. Horticulture is recognised to be very therapeutic. It will be sustained by offering a range of plants to retailers and by working in partnership with other local charities. The Nursery is managed by Graeme Iddon of Hesketh Bank, a nurseryman of considerable reputation.
The future of the Nursery has yet to be mapped out but there is the possibility of allotments being provided for the local community.
We are looking for volunteers to support the development of the project. If you are willing to offer time to this very worthwhile initiative, please call Kevin Hodges on –
07970 654909 or 01257 463012.
Parish Council Meeting.
The next Meeting will be held on the 25th March at 7.30pm in the School, Back Lane.
All residents are welcome to attend.
Message from PC Steve Hackney.
The next PACT Meeting will take place on 7th April between 7pm and 8pm at Parbold Douglas School. If you have any issues to raise, please go along to this meeting.
Due to a recent incident in Newburgh it is worth reminding people to keep their doors locked at all times even when property is occupied and also not to leave door and car keys in a vulnerable position.
Parish Council Precept 2009/10.
At the Parish Council Meeting held on 28th January 2009, the spending plans for the new fiscal year were discussed.
Following this, it was agreed to set a precept for 2009/10 at the level of £10045, which is an increase of 2.6% compared with the previous year.
Best Kept Garden Competition.
This popular event is again being held and we are hoping that Mavis Woods and her colleague will again be judging the gardens. We hope that residents will make that special effort with their front gardens to impress our judges.
There is no doubt that attractive, colourful gardens provide pleasure to all and are a backcloth to our entry in the Best Kept Village Competition.
Best Kept Village Competition.
We have noticed that some repairs to public seats are necessary. Shortly, the Council Chair and Clerk will be touring the village to see what other work is required to ensure the village looks smart to support our entry into the Competition this year. Our best results are achieved if householders and businesses provide support.
Judging of the Village will take place in June and July. The Judges will be looking for the over all tidiness of the village and the condition of private properties, gardens, fences and walls
Please help us to maintain standards and this year, endeavour to achieve good results.
Open Gardens Event 2009.
We have agreed, due to popular demand, to once again hold this event. The date for your diary is Sunday, 12th July 2009. Planning is still at an early stage but further information will be provided in due course.
Please support this local initiative.

Newburgh School News.
We continue to make improvements within School and most recently; it is the Victorian classroom that has had a makeover. The aim is for this room to be used as much as possible by the community and with this in mind, we are starting a Parent & Toddler group. This begins on 10th March at 9am and all are welcome (even if you do not have a baby or toddler) to come and have a cup of tea. We are also starting a coffee morning after half term, on a Thursday. This is for parents to stay behind after dropping their children off and instead of standing in the playground for a chat, to sit in comfort, have a cup of tea or coffee and a chat.
If any other groups feel that they can make use of the room, please contact the School. God bless.

Brownies in Newburgh will be unable to continue after the summer holiday if we cannot get some additional Leaders in place before then.
