About Newburgh

Here is Newburgh ‘at a glance’ to whet your appetite for the attractions of this picturesque Lancashire village.

  • The Parish covers an area of about 447 hectares (1104 acres) and the population is about 1100
  • The centre of the village is a conservation area. We’ve more than 40 listed buildings and many historic houses
  • We have our own Best Kept Gardens competition and we’ve been winners of the Lancashire Best Kept Village Competition. In 2006, we won the Champion Village Class for the second time.
  • Although we’re called “Newburgh” we have a long history. Most significant date is 1304 when the village was granted a Market Charter. We had a great 700th anniversary in 2004!
  • We’re not the only Newburgh – there are three more in the UK and we’re twinned with another in Newburgh, Indiana
  • We have our own Church of England church and there are churches for other denominations nearby. The Newburgh C of E School takes children from rising five to 11 years – and there is a play group and after school care club.
  • Every June we have a big bash – it’s called Newburgh Fair and has its roots in the fourteenth century. Processions, bands, fete and lots of family fun. And in November the Lions have a magnificent bonfire and fireworks
  • Feel like a walk? Try one of our 14 footpaths or follow the heritage trail to see some outstanding houses. And observe our trees - there are more than 500 in the village
  • In Newburgh you can dance, sing, be a Lion, play football, run a long way, watch sport on a big screen, join the WI or Mothers Union, go to a senior citizens’ party
  • Children can be cub scouts, brownies, guides, rainbows or enjoy a nearby youth centre
  • Hungry? Tasty food at the Post office tea room (you’ll be sitting in the former Horse and Jockey Inn). And the Red Lion Hotel has a full range of lunches and dinners
  • See what else you can buy in Newburgh - from Post Office services and groceries to kites, fruit and hanging baskets
